Awakening the Desert

encaustic on hand cast paper
(encaustic is a technique of building up an image with layers of beeswax and paint, melting each layer into the lower layers)
ARTIST STATEMENT
My work is an exploration of what lies beneath, what shows through the cracks in our veneer and confounds the structures we build. The grids, the walls, the order we seek to create are in dynamic tension with the passion and movement beneath our surfaces. I seek the space where the physical and the spiritual kiss.
Using built-up layers of paper pulp and collage materials, I paint with traditional mineral pigments, egg tempera and beeswax. My paintings and collages embrace a sense of history both in materials and content.
